Diwali Incense & pooja guide

Diwali, the festival of lights, runs over five days from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj. Homes are cleaned, rangoli is drawn at the door, diyas line every ledge, and on the main night families perform Lakshmi–Ganesh Puja to welcome prosperity.

Quick answer

Which incense is best for Diwali?

Kesar Chandan, Rose and Oudh are classic choices for Diwali. Fragrance is part of the welcome. Dhoop and incense are lit during Lakshmi–Ganesh Puja, carried through the house during aarti, and kept burning as guests arrive.

Fragrances for Diwali

When is Diwali?

Kartik Amavasya, the new moon of October or November. In 2026 Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday 8 November (Dhanteras on 6 November); in 2027 it falls on Friday 29 October.

Incense and dhoop in the Diwali ritual

Fragrance is part of the welcome. Dhoop and incense are lit during Lakshmi–Ganesh Puja, carried through the house during aarti, and kept burning as guests arrive. A rich, slow dhoop holds the room through the evening, while a lighter incense suits the days before, when the house is being readied.

Why these fragrances

  • Kesar Chandan Dhoop Sticks: Saffron and sandalwood, the classic pairing for Lakshmi Puja.
  • Rose Bambooless Dhoop Sticks: A warm rose that fills a whole house through the evening.
  • Oudh Natural Luxury Incense Sticks: A deep, royal oudh for the main night and for gifting.
  • Mogra Premium Incense Sticks: A fresh mogra for daily lighting through the five days.

  3. 3Offer the fragrance to Lakshmi and Ganesha during the aarti, circling clockwise.
  4. 4Keep a dhoop stick burning near the entrance as guests arrive, on a stable holder away from rangoli powder and curtains.

Frequently asked questions

Which agarbatti is best for Lakshmi Puja?

There is no single prescribed fragrance. Sandalwood (chandan), kesar, rose and jasmine are traditional favourites because they are associated with purity and auspiciousness; choose the one your family likes, and light it from the puja diya.

Should I use dhoop or agarbatti on Diwali night?

Many homes use both: agarbatti for the puja itself and a slower bambooless dhoop to keep the house fragrant while guests visit. Dhoop gives a denser fragrance that lasts through the evening.

When should I order incense for Diwali?

Orders leave our Hyderabad workshop within 48 hours and typically arrive in 3–5 working days in metro cities and 4–7 elsewhere, so ordering a week or more before Dhanteras is safest.
