Quick answer

Dhoop vs Agarbatti: What's the Difference?

Agarbatti is an incense stick hand-rolled on a thin bamboo core; dhoop is a solid stick made entirely of fragrant paste, with no bamboo. Because the whole dhoop stick is fragrance, it gives a denser, longer-held scent, while agarbatti is lighter and suits everyday use.

Try it with

At a glance

  • Core: agarbatti has a bamboo core; dhoop is bambooless.
  • Fragrance: dhoop is denser and fills larger rooms; agarbatti is lighter.
  • Smoke: both are low-smoke when charcoal-free; dhoop releases more fragrance per minute.
  • Burn time: both burn for about 55–60 minutes; our luxury dhoop up to 75.
  • Best for: agarbatti for daily prayer and small rooms; dhoop for festivals, long pujas and home fragrance.

Why bambooless dhoop smells stronger

In an agarbatti the bamboo core takes up part of the stick and burns without fragrance. A dhoop stick is fragrant paste all the way through, so every millimetre that burns releases scent. That is why one dhoop stick can fragrance a living room, while an agarbatti suits a prayer corner.

Which should you choose?

Choose agarbatti if you light incense twice a day at a small shrine or in a compact apartment. Choose dhoop for festivals, aarti, large rooms or when you want the fragrance to linger after guests leave. Many homes keep both.

Frequently asked questions

Is dhoop better than agarbatti?

Neither is better in general. Dhoop gives a stronger, longer-held fragrance; agarbatti is lighter and better for daily use in small spaces.

Does dhoop make more smoke?

Dhoop releases more fragrance per minute. If both are charcoal-free, smoke is comparable and low; always ventilate the room.

Do dhoop sticks need a special holder?

Use a holder with a slightly wider hole, or a dish of sand or rice, because bambooless dhoop sticks are thicker than agarbatti.
