Quick answer

How to Use Dhoop Sticks

Hold the tip of the dhoop stick in a flame until it catches, let it burn for five seconds, then gently blow out the flame so the tip glows. Stand the stick upright in a holder or a dish of sand, on a heat-safe surface away from curtains, and let it smoulder for about an hour.

Choosing a holder

Bambooless dhoop sticks are thicker than agarbatti, so use a holder with a wider hole, a dhoop stand, or a small bowl of sand, rice or salt. The holder should be wide enough to catch falling ash.

Getting the most fragrance

  • Light it 10–15 minutes before guests arrive or before puja begins.
  • Keep doors open between rooms to spread the fragrance.
  • To use half a stick, extinguish it by pressing the tip gently into sand, and relight it later.

Safety

  • Never leave a burning stick unattended.
  • Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
  • Place it away from curtains, paper and fans that blow embers.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my dhoop stick keep going out?

It was probably blown out too soon. Let the flame burn for a full five seconds before blowing it out, and make sure the stick is dry; store dhoop away from humidity.

Can I reuse a half-burnt dhoop stick?

Yes. Press the glowing tip into sand to extinguish it, and relight it next time.

Where should I place a dhoop stick?

On a stable, heat-safe surface in the room you want to fragrance, away from curtains and drafts.
