Quick answer

What Is Attar?

Attar (ittar) is a natural perfume oil made by distilling flowers, herbs or woods, traditionally into a base of sandalwood oil, using copper stills called degs. Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh is India's attar capital, famous for rose, kewda, mitti and shamama.

How attar is made

Flowers are heated with water in a copper deg; the fragrant vapour travels through a bamboo pipe into a receiver holding sandalwood oil, which absorbs the scent over days. The process, deg-bhapka, has changed little in centuries.

Attar and incense

Many Indian incense fragrances, such as rose, mogra and kewda, share their roots with attar. Our Rose Bambooless Dhoop opens on a Kannauj rose top note.
